Brave Pet of the Month Sept 2009

Meka is a fun-loving 2 year old Samoyed dog,
and in May 2009 arrived in our care following an ill-advised attempt to dash under a moving
LandRover.
His owner drove almost 80 miles to get to us within a couple of hours of the
accident, which gave us the best chance of repairing some very dramatic damage. The owner’s local vet had applied a
clean, damp dressing for the journey and we removed it to find that Meka had torn all the skin from the inside of
one hind leg (from above the hock all the way to his toe nails), shredded the surface of the exposed bones and left
the dorsal ligaments of all his toes on the road. It took 3 hours of bathing out grit and cutting away dead tissue
before we were ready to suture together the remnants of skin we hoped to salvage.
Weeks of daily dressings followed until the remaining defect was clean and ready to receive a skin graft. The skin
for this graft was taken from Meka’s tummy.
It has taken more than 3 months of veterinary care, but Meka is now doing very well,
and back to exercising in the fields and on his own treadmill. He may need one further small operation on his
smallest toe, but his leg is fully functional and comfortable and the hair is even growing back.
Despite being a world-class buster collar escapologist, Meka was a really lovely dog
to work with, and we are grateful to his owner for her commitment to the treatment of such a challenging case. We
are all delighted to see him doing so well.
The photo’s show the extent of the damage and the progression through treatment.
Well done Meka.
