With over 25% of pets overweight or obese - weight control is a big
concern for both people and their pets.
-
Being overweight has been proven to contribute to health issues in pets,
such as diabetes, heart disease, pancreatitis, spinal problems and arthritis.
-
Achieving your pets' ideal weight helps improve their health, quality of
life, and increase their life expectancy.
Signs of
being overweight
-
Overweight pets often do not have an obvious
waistline
-
Ribs cannot be easily felt around the chest
-
Pets may show exercise intolerance
-
Difficulty getting up and down
-
Pets may decline to go for walks
-
Collar may feel tighter than it used to!
Pet Exercise
Even pets benefit from regular exercise, promoting muscle development and fat burning. Overweight
pets may need to take it slowly to start with, and may need some encouragement to exercise
-
Try to exercise regularly - i.e. a walk a day - having a routine will help maintain
exercise levels
-
Playing games with pets will encourage exercise - playing fetch for dogs
or toy mice for cats
-
Share the exercise - if time is short, allocate different
family members to help exercise the pets
