February 2011 – Senior Pet Awareness Month at Cedar Grove.

Dear Client,

Happy New Year to you, your family and your pets.   Just as with humans, as our pets age they experience similar kinds of aches, pains and age related diseases as we do. Unlike with humans, sadly, our pets’ life spans are shorter than ours and they cannot always tell us when something is wrong. At Cedar Grove we are running a “Senior Pet Awareness Month” in February to highlight this important stage of your pets’ lives.

We will be running a series of Seminars which will highlight some the more common age related conditions which our pets can encounter, the signs and symptoms to look out for and a brief overview as to what we can do to help our pets. Topics which will be discussed include osteo-arthritis, dental disease, senior pet nutrition, kidney disease and hormonal problems.

In conjunction with these seminars we will be running “Senior Pet Awareness Clinics” where pets will be examined by our veterinary surgeons and their needs assessed. We will be offering a discount of 15% on our normal Veterinary Consultation charge during these clinics as well as 15% discount on certain services and products which may benefit your pets such as in-house blood analysis, dental procedures, x-rays, ultrasound and senior pet nutrition – check our website at
www.cedargrovevets.com
     for more details.

The signs and symptoms associated with these age related conditions can sometimes be very subtle and difficult to detect. Other signs are very obvious when we start to look for them and include the following:

- Weight loss or gain.
- Change in appetite.
- Increased drinking or urination.
- Reduced activity or lethargy.
- Changes in toileting habits.
- Behavioural changes.
- Changes in vision.

Our aim during Senior Pet Awareness Month is to highlight the conditions which our pets can commonly encounter and the signs and symptoms to look out for so that we can diagnose these conditions as early as possible and be proactive in treatment  thereby maintaining optimal health in our pets for as long as possible. If you would like to book a place at one of our seminars or a consultation for our pet in our “Senior Pet Awareness Clinics” or you have any concerns about your pet and would like a chat with our vets or nurses please contact the surgery today by telephone or email us at cedargrove@btinternet.com.

   Yours Sincerely,
   Jennifer Crawford Allen QVN.........
   Practice Manager.

identichipJune is National Microchipping month

Cedar Grove are offering a special deal of
10% off identichip, which can help find and
identify your pet

During June we are supporting "National Microchipping Month"
This will give you an opportunity to take up the special offer.

We strongly recomend you idENTICHIP your pet, it is the best way to protect against accidental loss and to ensure its safe return.

Could someone else easily identify your pet?
A microchip quickly identifies your pet and links it to you and unlike a collar or tag, it cannot be lost.

The permanent answer
idENTICHIP is a tiny microchip with an I.D. code unique to you and your pet. It is injected under the skin, is completely safe and causes no discomfort for your pet.

Reuniting pets and owners
A scanner detects the idENTICHIP and reads the unique code. This then links to a computer database providing the owner's address details, resulting in the pet being reunited.

 Anti-freeze– The Winter Killer

Over the icy cold winter months there has been an increase in the number of poisoned cats that are being admitted to our clinic here at Cedar Grove Veterinary Clinic, situated at 132 Upper Knockbreda Road, due to anti-freeze poisoning. It is our mission to try to bring awareness to the public about this condition, so that preventative measures can be put in place to try and reduce these incidents from happening.

Laura Wallace, veterinary surgeon, explains the toxic ingredient in anti-freeze is known as Ethylene Glycol, it is the major component in deicing fluids for windshields and radiator/engine coolants. Cats are attracted to anti-freeze because of its sweet taste and will indeed drink the mixture if stumbled upon. As little as a teaspoon-full consumed by a cat will have disastrous consequences. The prognosis is very poor as it is extremely rare for a cat to survive once it has ingested this deadly cocktail. It is believed that the animal really only stands a chance of survival, if it is actually seen drinking the anti-freeze and if it is treated up to an hour after ingestion, but unfortunately when physical signs become apparent it may already be too late.

Hollye Bullick, veterinary nurse at Cedar Grove outlines the physical symptoms to include unsteadiness on feet, twitching, lack of co-ordination, excessive drinking, vomiting, depression and collapse. It can take as little as a 2% concentration to poison a cat as they are very sensitive to ethylene glycol. This component seriously damages the kidneys and severely affects the central nervous system, so much so that in a matter of days it is fatal and the majority of cases result in death.

The symptoms however can be confused with such diseases as pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, diabetes and other forms of kidney disease. However, a diagnosis can be quickly confirmed by examining the cats urine under a microscope because ethylene glycol produces easily recognised crystals in the urine.

If we try and follow these steps below we can try and prevent anti-freeze poisoning of our pets in the future:

• Clean up any anti-freeze spills immediately and dispose of any anti-freeze-contaminated rags or paper in a sealed container.

• Regularly check your vehicle for anti-freeze leaks.

• Store anti-freeze in sealed, clearly marked containers, out of the reach of children and pets.

• Never allow pets access to the area when draining radiator fluid from a vehicle.

• Use products that don’t contain ethylene glycol.

• Try to discourage the drinking of water from puddles, as water run-off may contain anti-freeze from other vehicles.

• If ingestion of anti-freeze or engine coolant by a pet is suspected, seek veterinary attention immediately.
