Gilbert McKnight BVMS MRCVS Director

Senior Vet

After graduating from Glasgow University Veterinary School in 1987, I have spent the majority of my professional career at Cedar Grove and I continue to derive great pleasure in watching and helping it evolve and develop over the years. I enjoy the many aspects of our practice, involving medical, surgical and investigative work. I particularly enjoy the day to day involvement with the pets and their owners, and I love to see the pets develop through the various stages in their lives. My time away from the practice is spent with my family and working on my family farm. I enjoy playing golf and watching many sports, especially rugby.

I have been a member of the team at Cedar Grove since 1999. Since qualifying in 1996, I have had the pleasure of working in a range of fantastic practices and I have greatly enjoyed a variety of work ranging from lambing sheep in County Armagh to devising health plans for alpacas in New Zealand. Over my years at Cedar Grove I have developed my small animals skills in all disciplines but I have particular interest in surgery and ophthalmology. I recently completed the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies certificate in small animal surgery. I enjoy being involved in the management of the practice and feel a great responsibility to maintain, progress and improve on the reputation and high standards which Cedar Grove stands for. I have been very lucky to work with many gifted vets and nurses; I have also got to meet and know many dedicated animal lovers and their pets and I am privileged that many have become good friends over the years. Outside of Cedar Grove a young family and an active labrador keep me busy. I also enjoy taking part in triathlons, golf and getting into the great outdoors.

Pat Hart BVMS CertSAD MRCVS

Now the oldest member of the Cedar Grove team, I graduated from Glasgow University in 1974 and following an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery in Pennsylvania, fulfilled my life long ambition of joining my father David McCartney in the family practice. It is just the best job in the world and I have never had any regrets about my chosen career. I enjoy seeing new puppies and kittens at 1st vaccine and then watching as they turn into members of the family and characters in their own right. Many clients have become lifelong friends, as they are in and out with their pets for various illnesses and injuries or sometimes just regular preventative health care... I developed an interest in skin diseases and following further study and examination gained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Dermatology in 1994, and now see referral skin cases for colleagues from around the province. Outside work I enjoy tennis, hill walking in the Lake District and am trying to learn golf. A husband, 3 grown up children and 3 cats complete the Hart household.

Associate Vet

I qualified from Cambridge University in 1991. After a brief spell working with cattle in the Glens of Antrim, I decided that I didn’t have the circulation for the (fabulous) Northern Irish outdoors, and headed for sunnier climes and the RSPCA small animal hospital in Hong Kong. I returned to Belfast in 1993, and have enjoyed being part of the Cedar Grove team ever since. When not being kept very busy at Cedar Grove, I am kept even busier by four children, a wonderful black Labrador, the world’s most tolerant cat, two very patient ponies and a donkey who misses nothing.

I qualified from Cambridge over 20 years ago and still love my job! My special interests are x-rays and ultrasound scanning and trying to hunt down a difficult diagnosis. I work part time at the practice and enjoy the challenge of trying to balance my work with 4 children and a farm to look after. Pets at home include cattle, sheep, horses, cats, a Great Dane called Kiki who has taught herself to help with the sheep and a tame cockatiel who is learning to talk. She is rarely found watching TV!

Angela Hawkes RVN Head Nurse

Registered Veterinary Nurse (Head Nurse)

I have been Head Nurse at Cedar Grove Veterinary Clinic since 2001. I attended Myerscough College in Preston and qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 1995. I am very proud of our nursing team consisting of 6 qualified nurses and 4 assistant trainee nurses. As well as a high standard of technical nursing capabilities I feel as a nurse it is equally important to provide a high level of comfort and care for pets while away from their loved ones and their homes. I like to think that the in-patients at the clinic should be treated, as we would like our own pets to be treated. Therefore I can assure you that the utmost of care is taken of your pet while hospitalised. I have a genuine interest in expanding my knowledge and continually attend courses relevant to veterinary nursing and my role at Cedar Grove. I am also a qualified assessor, which means that I can assess and approve our trainees completing their portfolio for nursing exams. My career as a veterinary nurse is one that requires dedication and provides great rewards. Some of the many tasks carried out include: • Radiography • Blood sample collection • Laboratory • Preparation of patients for • Anaesthesia theatre • Dentistry • Tuition to Trainee’s • In patient Care • Fluid Therapy
